What is a promise ring?

A promise ring is a ring symbolic of a promise made to oneself or another. Often used synonymously with the term 'purity ring' a promise ring can represent the commitment to abstain from sex until some future time or event (e.g. marriage), or can represent a commitment to sexual monagamy between two people.

A promise ring is often given as a pre-engagement ring, where one person has promised to commit to another in marriage at some point in the future, but doesn't want or isn't able to be officially 'engaged' at that time.
